Mulch Depth and Coverage Guide
Calculate garden-bed volume and choose a sensible coverage plan.
Use this guide to understand the measurements and choices that go into a reliable material estimate. For exact purchasing quantities, consult the relevant product label or supplier.
Measure the full bed footprint
For a rectangular garden bed, length multiplied by width gives area in square feet. Curved beds can be approximated by dividing them into smaller measured regions. Measure at the outer edge of the intended mulch area rather than using a rough visual estimate.
For multiple beds, keep the area and depth of each one separate until the calculations are complete. That makes it easier to change quantities later.
Turn depth into mulch volume
Divide the intended mulch depth in inches by twelve to express it in feet. Multiply by bed area to obtain cubic feet; divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards.
A 20 ft by 5 ft bed at 3 inches deep requires 25 cubic feet, or about 0.93 cubic yards before any extra allowance. This can be compared directly with bagged or bulk mulch pricing.
Avoid overapplying around plants
The appropriate depth varies by plant, mulch type and site. Do not pile mulch against trunks, stems, foundations or siding. Excessive buildup can hold moisture in undesirable places.
Bag sizes differ, so use the exact cubic-foot number printed on the package. Confirm whether bulk delivery includes a minimum charge or load size.
Quick project checklist
- Measure beds and specify depth in inches.
- Check bag size before dividing volume.
- Leave appropriate clearance near plants and structures.
- Compare delivered bulk pricing with bagged pricing.
