How this tile calculator works
Tile orders should account for the actual surface area, the size of one tile and the cuts made near edges or obstacles. This tile calculator converts those measurements into an estimated tile count and box count. It is designed for straight, rectangular areas; measure separate sections individually when the room is irregular.
The calculation
Room area = length × width. Tile area = tile length × tile width ÷ 144. Required tiles = round up(room area × (1 + waste percentage) ÷ tile area). Boxes = round up(required tiles ÷ tiles per box).
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. With 12 in × 12 in tiles and 10% extra, allow 132 tiles. At 15 tiles per box, that means 9 boxes.
Before buying materials
- Measure each rectangular section separately and add the square footage.
- Check the exact tile count or square-foot coverage printed on the carton.
- Diagonal layouts, complex patterns and many obstacles can require more overage.
Frequently asked questions
Does the tool include grout lines?
No. It estimates material using nominal tile dimensions. Joint width, pattern and tile caliber can change the layout.
Can I use this for wall tiles?
Yes. Enter the wall section as length and width and exclude openings from your separate measurements.
Why are boxes rounded up?
Tile is normally purchased by the full carton, so partial cartons are rounded to a full box.
