How this fence calculator works
Straight fence runs can be estimated from the total length and post spacing. This calculator rounds the number of bays up to cover the entire run, then estimates posts, rails and pickets. Corner posts, gate openings, slopes and local structural requirements need a separate layout.
The calculation
Sections = round up(run length ÷ post spacing). Posts = sections + 1. Rails = sections × rails per section. Pickets = round up((run length in inches + gap) ÷ (picket width + gap)), plus waste allowance.
Worked example
For an 80 ft straight run with 8 ft sections, plan 10 sections and 11 posts. With two rails per section, plan 20 rails. At 5.5 in pickets and a 0.5 in gap plus 5% extra, estimate 170 pickets.
Before buying materials
- Deduct gate widths and plan gate posts separately.
- Verify required post depth and spacing for local conditions.
- Actual sectional layouts may differ from the maximum span used here.
Frequently asked questions
Does this account for corners?
No. Calculate each straight run and account for shared or special corner posts in your final plan.
Are gates included?
No. Treat each gate opening and its hardware as a separate item.
Does it calculate concrete for posts?
No. Use a separate concrete volume estimate after choosing post hole sizes.
