How this gravel calculator works
Gravel requirements depend on the area to cover, finished depth and the material’s bulk density. Different stone sizes and moisture levels can change tonnage, so the tool lets you adjust tons per cubic yard. Use your supplier’s density for a purchase estimate.
The calculation
Cubic yards = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Multiply by (1 + extra percentage), then multiply by tons per cubic yard.
Worked example
A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 in depth needs 50 cu ft or 1.85 cu yd. With 5% extra and a density of 1.4 tons/cu yd, estimate about 2.72 tons.
Before buying materials
- Measure a few spots to identify changes in grade and depth.
- Ask the aggregate supplier for a bulk density specific to your material.
- Compaction can affect the loose amount ordered; consult the supplier.
Frequently asked questions
Is every gravel type 1.4 tons per cubic yard?
No. The starting value is an illustration. Use a supplier-specific density.
Does this include a base layer?
Only the depth you enter. Calculate separate layers individually.
Should I round tonnage up?
Ask the supplier about minimum orders and how loads are priced or rounded.
