How this flooring calculator works
Most boxed flooring is sold by coverage area rather than by the number of planks. This flooring calculator works with laminate, vinyl plank and hardwood products when you know the square feet per carton. It adds a customizable waste allowance for cuts, damaged pieces and layout changes.
The calculation
Room area = length × width. Order area = room area × (1 + waste percentage). Boxes = round up(order area ÷ square feet per box).
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room has 180 sq ft. Adding 10% gives 198 sq ft to order. With 22 sq ft per box, order 9 boxes.
Before buying materials
- Use the coverage printed on your actual flooring carton.
- Include closets and alcoves you intend to cover.
- Different installation patterns may need different waste factors.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for vinyl plank?
Yes, as long as the product lists square-foot coverage per box.
Should I subtract cabinets?
Subtract only areas you are certain will not be covered and that your installation method allows you to omit.
What waste percentage should I use?
Ten percent is a common planning starting point, not a universal rule. Ask your installer or supplier for the correct allowance.
