PRACTICAL PROJECT GUIDE

How Much Extra Tile Should You Buy?

Why tile overage changes with patterns, cuts and replacement needs.

Use this guide to understand the measurements and choices that go into a reliable material estimate. For exact purchasing quantities, consult the relevant product label or supplier.

Why exact square footage is not enough

A 100-square-foot floor rarely uses exactly 100 square feet of tile. Edge cuts create pieces that cannot always be reused elsewhere. Uneven walls, breakage, directional patterns and spare replacement pieces also affect the amount required.

The waste percentage is an allowance applied after measuring the surface, not a substitute for measuring accurately. More waste does not correct a wrong room size.

Choose a sensible allowance

A simple straight layout with large open areas can create relatively little cutting loss. Diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, tiny rooms and many corners often create more. Ask your installer or supplier for an allowance appropriate to the chosen tile and layout.

As an illustration, a measured 120 sq ft floor with a 10% allowance calls for 132 sq ft of tile coverage. A 15% allowance would raise that to 138 sq ft. These are planning examples, not fixed installation standards.

Account for cartons and future repairs

Most suppliers sell tile by the box. Converting the adjusted area into boxes requires the exact tile count or square feet printed on the carton. If your finished space may need repairs later, keeping a small amount from the same production lot can be helpful.

Confirm return policies before purchasing additional cartons. Dye lots and manufacturing batches may differ, so buying a matching replacement years later is not always simple.

Quick project checklist

  • Confirm pattern and direction before ordering.
  • Enter actual tile dimensions and carton count.
  • Ask whether cut pieces can be reused.
  • Check the supplier’s return and batch policies.
